hatha yoga question by Manuel: Can I heal my back through hatha yoga?
I have been practicing yoga for a year now and just a few days ago I think I pulled something while doing Mountain pose (at the slight back bend part) because ever since my back has not felt right. It is not a pain per say but just like a slight pressure almost. Sometimes it does tend to hurt all of a sudden tho. I was wondering if there were any asanas that would help heal this? :)

I would suggest talking to your yoga teacher. Back problems are complex, so it’s important to find a teacher with adequate training and as much experience as possible. Some asanas can be helpful in one situation but should be avoided to prevent making the problem worse in other situations.

There is a lot of anatomy to the lower back but we will focus on what is important for lumbar fusion. Looking at the key structures that you need to know about, there are boney and non-boney structures that are important.The most important structures when it relates to lumbar fusion are: vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs, spinous process, transverse process, and the pedicles of the vertebrae.In between the vertebrae in your spine can be found supple, spongy, spinal discs that are protected by a tougher outer layer. This layer surrounds the soft nucleus that allows for cushioning and the smooth movement of your spine, not unlike shock absorbers for your automobile.

There are different causes of low back pain. This article is focusing on one of the most common scenarios, which is back pain involving a disk. Sharp pain, sciatica (pain traveling down the leg), severe postural distortions, difficulty getting up, and difficulty walking are common occurrences. Lower back pain is a very complex problem with many structures of the lower back being involved. For those that have a back injury, in time that lower back injury could lead to lumbar fusion. Herniated disc and spinal decompression therapy offers a non-invasive therapy for people suffering from debilitating back pain. Traditional traction devices that were used in the past to treat back pain have been replaced by technologically advanced herniated disc and spinal decompression tables. Often, when low back pain strikes, the person was doing something as gentle as picking up a pencil or brushing their teeth. It is illogical to think that those activities would cause such pain. I suggest the body was already in a state of dysfunction and all it took was the wrong movement (usually forward) for the symptoms to manifest.

Back pain is a very common experience that most people have to deal with at some point in their lives. Heating pads are often a common recommendation for back pain but the truth is that most people do not use these pads properly or even know why they work. There are several ways to determine which one is being suffered by a patient. The first is to simply recall if there has been “trauma” or direct injuries inflicted to the back like falling or vehicular accident. There are many reasons you may need to have spinal disc surgery. It can be anything from an old injury that is acting up, or even just due to old age. It’s hard to tell exactly what is causing your back pain without a proper diagnosis.

Meditation Guided Walking Ideas

Meditation guided sessions might typically be characterized as sitting quietly and focusing inward, but for the more actively inclined among meditation practitioners, walking guided meditation might be a good choice to try out. You may be surprised to find how well the repetitive rhythm of walking can induce a meditative trance when performed properly.

The first thing you will need to accomplish when implementing a new regime of walking meditation is to find a pathway that you can walk down. It should be fairly straight and smooth with no gaps (and preferably no hills or inclines). A path around thirty feet long will do nicely. This path can be either in or outdoors. Once you have found your path, stand at one end and begin walking at a consistent pace; fast or slow, however you feel suited to walking. You may want to traverse the path a few times just to get a good feel of it before beginning walking meditation.

When you are ready to begin the meditation routine itself, walk the path as you did before, but look down with half-closed eyes as you walk. Put your focus on your legs: their movement and the energy your body gives them. All of your thoughts should center on your legs. Actively feel your foot hit the ground. Let no other thoughts enter your mind other than how your feet and legs move and function across this path. If you have tried guided meditation with mantras, this is a similar notion, only instead of reciting a mantra, your attention goes to your legs.

Inevitably, you will reach the end of your pathway. When you do, pause for a brief second and turn around to cross the path again, continuing this meditation technique. If your mind tends to wander, the brief break in turning around will likely remind it where you need it to focus. You may feel unsure of whether or not you have reached a meditative trance in this method, as it might feel foreign to you. Do your best not to worry about that aspect of it, as that can be a huge distraction.

Trusting yourself and your capabilities to meditate properly are very valuable skills, and necessary for this active form of meditation. Continue walking back and forth over this path for around twenty minutes. If you feel satisfied with your meditation before twenty minutes have elapsed, feel free to end the routine there. Depending on how you meditate, it could be more about the laps on the path than the time put into this form of meditation guided.

I’ve never meditated because I don’t know how. I was never taught. How does one meditate? Is there a step-by-step process to meditation? Is there a guideline anyone can post? A how-to? Anything? mantra meditation question by sky_style_violet: Difference between mantra meditation and t.m?
Does anybody who knows about meditation and or has done trancendental meditation know the differences between them. As i have been doing minfullness a bit on an off really and started doing mantra as i found it easier to actually bring my mind back to something other than just ‘awareness’ as i probably don’t have much realisation of what that really is yet lol. Anyway i was interested in T.M as it is meant to be very impressive but my mum said theres no difference between that and mantra and went on a weekend course once to do it about 15 years ago though.

I talked to a person who taught TM…they charged a lot and then told me my mantra was all wrong, only theirs was right..I wasn’t favorably impressed with TM at all…won’t be learning that…
