Meditations Effects On Bipolar Depression
Article by Michael Barker-Smith
Meditation is a well-known alternative therapy that is used by many people throughout the world for its calming and balancing effects, not to mention promoting a feeling of well being, and self-awareness. However, what many people don’t know is that meditation is also a very effective and a natural approach to treating bipolar depression symptoms in sufferers of the disorder.
For those who are suffering from bipolar disorder, and want a natural remedy, or a complimentary therapy to help lower their dependency, or dosage of medications, meditation can be very effective, and costs next to nothing to participate in. To get the best effect from meditation, bipolar sufferers must create a regular daily routine, and stay committed to it, in order to get to the root of what has caused the depression symptoms in the first place. Meditation does not produce instantaneous results, but will produce noticeable results in sufferers if used daily over a reasonable period of time.
According to university studies mindfulness meditation, when used correctly, produces positive changes that will effect the bipolar, and other depression sufferers long-term in both brain activity, and the immune system. Mindfulness meditation can be safely used by bipolar sufferers, and involves the sufferer giving their attention to the moment, without judging, or taking actions on their thoughts. This teaches sufferers to put things into perspective, and work through problems rather than acting on impulse.
In these studies, it was noted that those who don’t suffer from bipolar, or depression and are feeling optimistic or positive, there was an increased electricity in the left front of the brain. The same results were found in subjects who had depression, and had been using daily session of meditation for over a period of eight weeks. Additionally, there was an increase in antibodies in the blood, much the same as if the person meditating had taken a flu vaccine. Apart from bipolar disorder, studies are being set up to find out the effectiveness of meditation with other disorders, and severe illnesses.
Many people are of the impression that in order to use, and benefit from meditation, they must practice certain religious beliefs. This is not the case, however. Meditation can be used with anyone’s personal beliefs, or even without religious beliefs. The main aim of meditation sessions is to clear the mind, find peace, and promote well being through complete relaxation.
Bipolar disorder patients who have used meditation claim that they have noticed feelings of calmness, a sense of well being, and an increased awareness of things surrounding them. Additionally, those who had used meditation daily over a period of time concluded that they had reduced depression, irritability and anxiety symptoms.
Many medical practitioners recognize meditation as an effective natural treatment for not only the general population, but for those who are suffering from disorders such as bipolar depression. Many doctors prescribe meditation as a complimentary therapy while their patients are on medication, to help them find the underlying reasons for their depressive symptoms.

daily meditation question by Parker: Improvement in daily life from meditation?
Anyone noticed anything dramatic?
I’ve been noticably calmer and gentler towards others and my anxiety is (better) under control.
Just curious what others have experienced….
Also, how long did it take to achieve those results?

Answer by Kathryn R
I have found that with mediation I have been able to lower the dose of my anti-anxiety medication and I sleep a lot better than I did before and I have more patience with life in general. I hope that with time I will be able to lower my blood pressure enough to either lower the dose of medication or to come off of it all together. It has taken me about a month to see a real difference. But with in a week I was feeling more relaxed.

Destress Yourself with Daily Deep Relaxation Meditation
Article by Elizabeth Stanfill
When it comes to Meditation we must have an open mind and make a commitment if we want change in our lives. When people think of meditation they often think of religion or they think of it as a waste of time. But meditation is the ultimate skill of patience, which gives peace and calm to our minds, bodies, and then to our lives.
Stress causes a racing mind of worry and fear, which is usually on autopilot. When on autopilot we display unwanted emotions like anger, irritability, and moodiness. When our mind is noisy we are unable to fall asleep, stay asleep, and get essential hours of sleep. Other thoughts that may cause disorder in our mind and lives are of what we don

meditation books question by Andrew: Good books on meditation?
I would like to point out first that, from what I learned so far, that meditation comes from relaxation, contemplation and a negation, but any form of meditation would do. I am curious. Specifically along the lines of Taoism/Buddhism/or Kabballah based. Suggestions?

Sunny Day – Meditation Exercise
Article by Brenda Mayhew
Begin by imagining yourself outside in your favourite place in nature. It could be a relaxing tropical beach, it could be a flourishing old garden, or maybe a peaceful forrest. Choose a location that feels good for you.
Now I’d like you to imagine the sky, what colours can you see there. Are there clouds. If yes what shapes are the clouds making. Do you hear any sounds, are there waves or maybe a gurggling stream. What about animals, or the sound of wind blowing. Concentrate on all the sights and sensations that you feel.
Imagine the sun, the warm bright dazzling sun, close your eyes and feel the heat of the sun as it touches your skin. Now I’d like you to move the heat from the sun to other parts of your body. As you feel the heat on your skin I’d like you to let that area of your body relax.
Move the sun over your face, feel the heat on your cheeks and your nose. Let the heat melt away any tension you are holding in your face. Let the muscles of your face relax and enjoy the warm sensation of the sun touching your skin.
Now move the light down into your throat area. Feel your neck muscles relax and loosen. Enjoy the feeling of your body relaxing under the warm sensation of the sunlight. Move the sun across your shoulder area, release all tension held in your shoulders and let them relax and become heavy.
As you relax you feel more and more comfortable in your surroundings, all your stress melts away and you feel good for taking some time out for yourself. Let the sun move down over your arms now, as it moves down it draws all the stress down and out of your arm, feel the tingling in your fingertips as your muscles relax and your tension trickles away through your fingers into the warm ground underneath.
You move the swun back to your chest and stomach area. Release all those tight little knots and let the sun light flood in until it feels like your whole body is filled with a warm glow. Your body is glowing so much that it begins to feel like the sunlight is coming from the inside instead of the outside.
You look down at your chest and see the light growing brighter and brighter. You realise that this is no longer sunlight that is relaxing your body but your own internal light shining out and rejuvenating everything it touches.
As you light rejuvenates you from the inside the sunlight shines down and relaxes and warms you from the outside until it feels like you are surrounded by a large bubble of warm, bright light. As the light gets brighter you feel energy flooding into your body, all your tensions and worries are gone to be replaced by this bright blinding light filled with hope and energy.
As the light fades and the sun sets you get up from your own special comfortable place and leave this area to go back to your own life. I’d like you to take with you the warm light and the feeling of energy that it has brought you, and remember whenever you wish to come back to this place and feel the sunlight again all you have to do is close your eyes and create it.
