learn meditation techniques question by Sunshine Machine: Can anyone tell me more about chakra meditation?
I’ve been told that most of my chakras are not open at all. I want to try some of the meditation techniques I printed out but with further research I learned that chakra meditation can be dangerous and that there is a difference between the buddhist concept of chakras and the new age one. I was wondering if anyone could give me more information about chakras, what the really are(buddhist as opposed to new age), and opening them. Thank you. :)

Answer by \/\/3b |
I’m not sure about the differences between Buddhist and New Age meditations. I did my own thing. However, a lot of New Age teachings are derived from Buddhist and other Far East practices, so you have that.

One book I’d recommend is “Astral Dynamics” by Robert Bruce. It’s more about astral projection, but it goes over a good deal of chakra exercises to help refine your energy control to help you project. Perhaps you could find some answers there. I think scribd.com has an electronic copy you can view for free online.

Other than that, I’d recommend starting with the base chakra first. Stimulating one chakra tends to start activating the chakras above it, causing energy overflows. It’s nothing to be scared of, but this helps to ground and center you, in turn dealing with over-excitation that may occur.

Atheists who understand the value of meditation, should one learn meditation from books and scientific papers?

Meditation Books

meditation books question by My account has been compromised: Atheists who understand the value of meditation, should one learn meditation from books and scientific papers?
There are many main stream meditations and most of them belong to religion such as Tibetan Buddhism or have an historical connection with religion. For example, TM is secular but is connected to Hinduism. There is also, of course, the Christian meditation.

Some scientists, such as Benson with its relaxation response protocol, have described meditations in scientific papers. Benson’s relaxation response is derived from TM, but there is no professionally trained teachers and some studies indicate that the benefits are different, which makes sense because the teaching is different. There are also many books on meditation.

The results of a given meditation vary from person to person, but studies show that, despite these variations, different meditations provide completely different results. The difference between two kind of meditations can be similar to the difference between just lying down and sleeping. Of course, the results of sleeping or lying down vary from person to person, but still these are clearly two different practices with different results and these differences are universal. Every one needs sleep. No one can replace sleep by just lying down (though there may very few exceptions). The point here is that it is not true that all meditations are similar and science can discover universal differences between different techniques.

So what is your position on this. Should we consider the different meditations scientifically as they can be currently learned, irrespectively of their connection with religion? Or should we reject any connection with religion and create our own personal meditation from books and scientific papers?
For those who want references, I would suggest that you do your own search in Google Scholar with the term “meditation”- avoid standard Google because then you will have all sorts of weird sites with no scientific value. In Google Scholar, you will see many sites with scientific research on mindfulness meditation and TM, the most studied. You will also find comparative studies. If you want my opinion, TM is the best, but please make your own evaluation.

Meditation is a way to calm the mind and body. I don’t have problems with it per se as an atheist, only when it’s tied to mumbo jumbo.

Learn Meditation: The Techniques

Article by Kenny Wheeler

Meditation brings a person inner peace, relaxation, increased awareness and mental focus. All these can be achieved by learning meditation. There are numerous techniques as to how to attain the inner peace that you have long been wanting. Meditation is easier than you might imagine. It is important to learn the following techniques when doing your meditation routines to become more calmed and focus:1. It is important to Choose a time in your daily routine when you are the least likely to be disturbed. Try to start meditating for a period of 15-45 minutes to see the full benefits of meditation. 2. As you learn to meditate, it is important that you practice it in a calm and relaxed environment. Try to avoid as much distractions if possible. Switch off the TV, phone, etc. as they might distract you right in the middle of meditation. Meditating at an outside place can be helpful, provided that it is not noisy. As much as possible pick a place that has sufficient circulation of fresh air. This will bring you to a more meditative state faster. 3. Have a meditation posture. Ideally meditation is done in a sitting position with pillows to make the meditation comfortable. When in a sitting position make sure that the spine is erect and straight. Meditating in an erect posture is very conducive and helpful in achieving high states of awareness and concentration for long duration of time. 4. Try to have a mantra when doing your meditation routine. A Mantra is a group if sound vibrations which affects the mental state of a person. An important criterion for mantra selection is that it must appeal to the mind fully when spoken verbally. Mantras do not have any specific meaning. Their power lies not in the meaning of the word but through the vibratory effects of the sound that they produced when spoken verbally or mentally.Learn these simple mediation techniques to achieve that highest state of calmness and peace inside of you that you want to experience. Simple and Easy Meditation Techniques for Beginners
learn meditation techniques

Article by Jonsonmak

The main aim of meditation is to calm your mind and body. However, where to start and how to start meditation is the most difficult part of this valuable art. Therefore, meditation techniques for beginners in the initial stages always remain a little tricky. If you have the right knowledge about meditation and its techniques, you would do well and go a long way in your journey. There’s no set pattern for a meditation session. They are different and can be customized according to your convenience. So, just don’t get confused and anxious if you do not make it right on the first occasion. Choose whatever way best suits you, because relaxation of mind and body is the most important purpose of meditation. A free mind will help you to go through your meditation sessions smoothly. The meditation techniques for beginners invariably follow the art of breathing in some stage or the other. In fact, this is the easiest way to begin your learning process. The main concept of breathing exercises is noticing and controlling your breath in a relaxed manner. If you do this technique rightly on a regular basis, you would notice its beneficial effects within a very short period of time. The walking meditation has also become very popular these days. It just involves a casual stroll in your garden or park but being in a state of awareness of the things surrounding you. This is very simple and anybody can do it quite easily. In fact, we sometimes do it unknowingly. And obviously you have to keep your eyes open while walking!Meditation techniques for beginners may also involve guided voice sessions. A voice session can be conducted in person under the supervision of an experienced instructor or in pre-recorded CDs. All you need to do is to sit back and follow the instructions carefully. The choice of the type of voice session rests with you. However, voice sessions like this have proved very effective, as you can listen to the recorded versions as many times as you want. All these meditation techniques for beginners will prove extremely helpful if you practice them regularly with proper discipline and dedication.Devoting time for meditation on a daily basis is absolutely vital. You have to set aside some of your time for learning and practicing all the techniques. During the initial stages, practicing for long hours would not be possible for you; brief sessions of about ten to fifteen minutes would be what you should be aiming for. But regularity is very important in case of meditation. If you are an extremely busy person, keep aside some time from your daily schedule by avoiding lesser important things like watching TV or going through the pages of a magazine. To begin is the most important thing for beginners! Be flexible, and make changes in your lifestyle to include meditation; for life will itself become a lot easy through it. You can also search on the internet to know about various mediation techniques and poses.

Learn to Meditate

Article by David Bohl

Most of us lead hectic lives as we balance our work with personal obligations. We may be stressed out juggling all of this and need some sort of stress release, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. Or we may be perfectly happy with our busy lives, but still could use some time to bring some peace and calm into our world.

Meditation has long been a practice that lets people find that inner peace and outer calm. It allows us to take a break from the busyness of our lives. It gives us a respite from hurrying about so we can create some outer calm. And it provides our minds with a rest from thinking overtime and growing more stressed by the day.

If you’ve never really experienced inner peace and outer calm, you’re in for a real treat. Meditation is not just for monks, religious fanatics, or recluses. Today meditation is for everyone who seeks sanctuary from the world-even for a few minutes a day. And it’s not all that complicated or difficult to do to get instant benefits. You might not become a master meditator and achieve instant stillness of your mind the first time you do it, but you will get immediate relief from your frantic life as you retreat into that quiet place within.

Here are 10 simple steps to start you on your way:

1. Commit to your daily practice. Decide that you will meditate every day, even if just for 5 minutes.

2. Find a place where you can meditate every day. Pick a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed and meditate there every day, as you will build up energy in that space.

3. Choose the time. Meditate the same time each day if possible, best times being early morning or early evening. Start out for 5 minutes and add a few more minutes each day until you’re up to 20-30 minutes.

4. Prepare the environment. Light a candle, burn incense, create an atmosphere conducive to quieting your mind and body.

5. Warm up. Before meditating, practice yoga or stretch out your body to relax your muscles and slow down your mind.

6. Select the most comfortable posture. Most meditators sit in a chair, on the floor, or on a bench with a straight back. Find what works best for you so you stay alert but relaxed.

7. Start with 3-part breathing. Breathe in through your nose into your abdomen and let it expand. Bring the breathe into your lungs and let them fill up. Collapse your abdomen and push the air out through your nose.

8. Continue slow, deep breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply to a count of 5 for each of the three parts, until you feel sufficiently relaxed.

9. Select a method for each meditation session. You might try counting breaths, counting numbers or saying a mantra (a simple one is I AM). Listen to music, watch a candle. Observe your thoughts; stare at a mandala. You can also experiment with chanting, visualizing a relaxing scene, doing yoga, or simply practicing a state of mindfulness. All are all acceptable methods for meditating; find out which one works for you.

10. Keep a journal. Record your experiences with meditation to see what benefits you’re getting; this will keep you motivated to keep at it and try different things.

Some people meditate for years and never achieve a perfectly silent mind, however, if you don’t make that your only goal, you won’t set yourself up for disappointment or failure. Just look at the precious time you take to sit quietly in meditation as a mental spa, a break in your routine, a gift to yourself. You need to take time every day to recharge your mental and physical batteries. Consider meditation as your tool to achieve inner peace and outer calm to return to your life refreshed.
